BMS outsources US distribution to Exel

Mount Vernon, IN, US: Third-party logistics giant Exel has won a contract to provide U.S. distribution for global biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb. As part of the contract, Exel purchased the existing Bristol-Myers Squibb distribution centres in Mount Vernon, Ind., and will take over operations in the second quarter of this year.

Exel will provide logistics operations and finished goods distribution services including storage and distribution of cold and non-cold chain products, clinical trials, samples and exports.

Shortly after it takes over operations in Mount Vernon, Exel will open and manage a second distribution centre on its Mechanicsburg, Penn., campus for Bristol-Myers Squibb.

BMS is part of a growing trend for pharmaceutical companies to outsource their logistics operations. Last year Pfizer awarded a distribution and transport deal to Exel.
