US firm buys chilled food group Daniels

Leeds, UK: New York-based natural food producer the Hain Celestial Group has bought chilled food group Daniels, parent company of County Durham firm International Cuisine, for around £150m.

Daniels makes a range of chilled foods as Covent Garden Soup and Johnson’s Juice.

Hain Celestial chief executive Irwin Simon said: “The strategic acquisition of Daniels extends Hain Celestial’s presence into one of the fastest-growing healthy food segments in the UK with a solid leadership position and platform for the growth of our combined operations.”

Simon said that Hain would be looking to expand the distribution of certain Daniels brands.

“We think there is a lot of opportunity to bring Daniels’ expertise in fresh soups and desserts to the United States for consumers looking for fresh, natural soups instead of canned soups.”

A spokesman for Daniels said: “Currently Daniels Group manages its own distribution from central warehouse, distribution from site and factory gate collection.  It is too early to comment on future arrangements as the immediate focus is to maintain business momentum and to assess the many opportunities that lie ahead.”
