Wincanton wins Morrisons convenience store contract

Feltham, west London, UK: Wincanton has clinched a five-year deal with Morrisons to operate the supermarket chain’s first dedicated UK convenience distribution centre in London.

The multi-million pound contract is for combined warehouse and transport operations. Morrisons plans to open 20 new convenience stores in the UK by the end of the year following successful trials of its “M Local” format in Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham.

The 9,290 sq metre cross-dock distribution centre will open in Feltham, west London, early next year.

Wincanton chief executive Eric Born said: “We have always believed that the UK retail sector offers Wincanton real opportunities to broaden our service offering and grow our market share. This announcement further endorses that belief and highlights the enormous potential that exists for the group.”
