Aldi to expand distribution network as sales continue to rise

Atherstone, UK: Discount grocery retailer Aldi is planning to add new distribution centres and expand existing ones as part of a £1.3bn investment.

Aldi revealed the move when unveiling its latest financial figures, which showed that sales increased 8.3% to £12.3bn in the year to 31 December 2019, due to an “influx of new shoppers”.

Under its investment plan, Aldi expects to open around 100 new stores in the UK during 2020 and 2021 in line with its long-term target of 1,200 stores by 2025, alongside over 100 store upgrades.

Giles Hurley, chief executive for Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “With the UK’s economic outlook increasingly uncertain, families are more concerned about their grocery bills than ever. We’ve seen before that our customers need us most in times of financial hardship, which is why our commitment to remain Britain’s lowest-priced supermarket is more important than ever.”
