Asda opens giant chill site

Rochdale, UK: Asda has opened its new Rochdale site that will be one of Europe’s largest single, chilled distribution sites. The centre, at Kingsway Business Park on a 17.6hectare site opened on 8 November.

Asda distribution director, Ian Stansfield, says: “The Rochdale distribution centre will future-proof our supply chain across the M62 corridor and will mean we provide first-class logistics for our superstores and supermarkets.”

Wincanton won the five-year contract to manage the 45,800sq metre new-build chilled distribution centre that will pick chilled and frozen store orders. The contract will also see Wincanton deliver to stores and supermarkets in the North Western corridor of the M62. Asda opened the centre to increase capacity for its network due to store growth in the region, especially following last year’s acquisition of the Netto chain.

Meanwhile Wincanton has also won a multi-million five-year contract with supermarket group Morrisons to operate its first dedicated UK convenience distribution centre in London. The contract is for combined warehouse and transport operations, supported by Wincanton’s system platform. Morrisons plans to open 20 new convenience stores in the UK by the end of 2012 following trials of its ‘M Local’ format in Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham. The new 9,000sq metre cross-dock distribution centre will open in Feltham, west London, early next year.

Wincanton operates the Belfast depot on behalf of Musgrave Retail Partners NI, wholesale distributors of frozen, chilled and ambient grocery to the SuperValu, Centra and Mace brands in Northern Ireland.
