Iveco launches hybrid truck in UK

Watford, UK: Iveco‘s hybrid Eurocargo in 12 tonne form is on display at the Low Carbon Vehicle show this week.

The Eurocargo (120E18/P), which is also available at 7.5 tonnes, uses a diesel- electric parallel hybrid driveline making it possible to carry out multi-drop distribution in towns and cities without sacrificing high-speed performance on motorways.

It is powered by an 180hp, 16-valve, four-cylinder Tector EEV diesel engine working in combination with a 60hp electric motor-generator. The engine and motor are driven through a six-speed automated gearbox with electric power from a lithium ion battery with 1.9kWh capacity.

Martin Flach, product director at Iveco UK, says: “We have managed to engineer all of the hybrid technology into the Eurocargo with only a 250kg payload deficit over a conventional diesel engined model.”

Iveco is also displaying two natural gas powered Iveco Eco Daily trucks, a 7-tonne (70C14G) model due to enter operation with Tesco and a 3.5 tonne (35C14G) company demonstrator. The vehicles operate in the UK on compressed bio methane (CBM), a commercially competitive and environmentally sound fuel that can be directly substituted for natural gas.

A 21-tonne Stralis Active Day (AD260S30Y/FS-DCNG) 6×2 rigid operated by Coca-Cola Enterprises is also displayed. The Stralis runs on bio methane and has been in service for over a year and will with Coca-Cola that plans to add a further 13 units to its fleet.

The Low Carbon Vehicle show is open today and tomorrow at Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, Northamptonshire.
