LED lighting cuts Oakland International energy use by 42%

Redditch, Worcestershire, UK: Oakland International has installed LED lighting in its cold stores to achieve energy savings of about 42% annually.

Ruud Lighting carried out the installation that Oakland says is the first use in the UK of LED lighting in a chilled environment.

The move is also set to deliver savings in terms of carbon reduction by some 21-tonnes the company says.

David Hoey, head of Oakland’s environmental management group and its director of human resources and purchasing, says: “Oakland International has a strong tradition of investigating and implementing eco-friendly initiatives throughout its operations, continuing to work with alternative processes and methods where possible to reduce our environmental footprint and that of our customers.

“The new LED lighting has had an immediate benefit by greatly reducing our energy consumption and carbon emissions, as well as enhancing the working environment for our team, delivering much improved uniformity in a lighting solution which is more akin to daylight.”

“With Oakland’s environmental impact continuing to reduce, even though we have more than doubled in size and operational scale, the additional benefits derived from installing the LED’s include annual savings of £2,400 in energy costs and maintenance charges, and with the LED’s having a life span of over 75,000hr, our savings will equate to well over £19,000 over 10 years, which is considerable.”

Oakland International provides third party chilled distribution for UK, Ireland and European retailers, servicing many on a daily basis. Supply chain functions include warehousing, picking and distribution for ambient, chilled and frozen products, with the company highly skilful at providing a complete distressed load management service.
