McCulla’s truck driving challenge for young farmers

Lisburn, Ireland: McCulla Transport Ireland, which runs 100 refrigerated trailers, has teamed up with the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) to run an Artic Challenge and put the winner through his or her HGV class 1 training with 35 hours of CPC training.

The McCulla Artic Challenge is an opportunity for young farmers to gain valuable training and employment through a driving challenge. There will be approximately 100 entrants from YFCU clubs in Northern Ireland.

Each entrant must be 20 years old and hold a car licence but not an HGV licence. They will drive on of 10 Volvo 460hp trucks and trailers at 44 tons gross.

Once each entrant is shown the basics of how to drive an articulated truck, they have to drive round a specifically designed course to test their skills in areas such as spatial awareness, reversing, manoeuvring, and safety. Five driving schools will provide judges to access each entrant’s skills.

Along with the training, worth around £3,500 (US$5,700), McCulla is offering a job with a starting salary of £18,000 ($30,000) to the winner.
