New Dover-Calais route

Dover, UK: DFDS and LD Lines are poised to launch a new Dover-Calais service.

The service, which is scheduled to start on February 17, will start off with just one ship, the Norman Spirit. However,  the companies expect to add another ferry as soon as a suitable ship can be made ready.

DFDS and LD Lines said they were grateful for the support they had received received from the French Government, Chamber of Commerce, the local authorities and the ports.

In a statement they said: “We are confident that our customers and the many people and freight companies that travel between France and Dover will benefit from the flexibility we can now offer with both a northern leg on Dover-Dunkerque and a southern leg on Calais-Dover.”

There will be five crossings a day until a second ferry is ready.

The move follows the recent collapse of  French ferry firm SeaFrance. SeaFrance went into liquidation after the European commission ruled a bailout by the French government was illegal.
