Penske Logistics opens chilled food warehouse in Michigan

Romulus, Michigan, USA: Penske Logistics’ mammoth chilled food distribution centre in Romulus, for supermarket chain Kroger, is now operational.

The new $98.5m distribution centre, called the Michigan Fresh Center, has 105 loading docks and supports food distribution for Kroger’s 120 stores in the state.

The 606,000sq ft warehouse, made up primarily of cold storage, is in contention for Southeast Michigan’s largest fridge. The warehouse includes a 250,000sq ft refrigerated section and a 100,000sq ft section chilled at -15 degrees, said Pat Doran, project and engineering manager with Penske.

Penske Logistics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Penske Truck Leasing, provides similar warehousing and distribution management to Cincinnati-based Kroger and other companies throughout the US, such as Starbucks and Wagmans Grocery.

The new warehouse replaces one Kroger had in Ohio.

“All products housed in the new distribution center are Kroger products and the facility will only service Kroger’s Michigan Division,” Rachel Hurst, corporate affairs manager for Kroger, said in a news release.

Jeff Bullard, senior vice president of the central region for Penske Logistics, said: “Food and beverage is one of our stated verticals that we see a lot of growth in.”
