Target stores join US GreenChill partnership

Minneapolis, US:  Target, a food retailer with 1,755 stores in 49 states is the latest company to join the US Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill program.

This partnership will help Target reduce refrigeration emissions by adopting green refrigeration technologies in its stores.

Dan Riley, vice president, property development operations, at Target says: “We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint by forging new partnerships, achieving milestones in our business and progressing towards our sustainability goals. Today’s announcement represents an important step in reducing Target’s refrigeration emissions.”

The GreenChill program will help Target achieve environmental sustainability commitments with benchmarking and greater access to EPA research.

“As Target expands its fresh food assortment throughout the nation, excellent refrigeration management will become more and more important for the company’s environmental responsibility goals,” said Keilly Witman, GreenChill Program Manager, EPA.

About GreenChill

GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration is an Environmental Protection Agency Partnership with food retailers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. The GreenChill partnership was launched on 2007 and now has 7,000 partner stores in 50 states representing 20% of the supermarket industry.

Members include regional grocers like Stater Brothers in southern California, small health food stores like Down-to-Earth, and nationally recognized names like Whole Foods and the newest partner, Target Corporation, the partnership now represents 2% of the supermarket industry. The partnership works with food retailers to transition to more environmentally friendly refrigerants, reduce the amount of refrigerant used in stores, and eliminate harmful refrigerant leaks.
