UK Cold Chain Leaders report

London, UK: Cold Chain News has published its Cold Chain Leaders 2020 report, listing the top players in UK temperature-controlled logistics.

The Cold Chain Leaders 2020 listing, published by Cold Chain News magazine and sponsored by Refrigeco, is available now priced £99.

This year’s listing shows that Culina Logistics had a standout year with turnover up 27% to £850m in 2019. NewCold also saw turnover jump by 24% and FreshLinc’s turnover rose 18%. Turnover increased by 12% at McCulla (Ireland). Many companies saw single-digit growth, including Dennis Distribution (8%), Lineage Logistics (7%) and Nagel Langdons (7%). Culina has reinforced its top slot by buying Fowler Welch from the Dart Group for £98m in June this year.

Over the last few years US companies have made major inroads into the UK market including Michigan-based Lineage Logistics’ takeover of Yearsley Logistics at the end of 2018. Agro Merchants, based in North America, is also acquisitive and bought Grocontinental at the end of 2017. Family-owned companies in our listings that haven’t been taken over include Reed Boardall and Turners of Soham.

Comments from chief executives this year focus on the effect of coronavirus on their businesses. The picture is mixed but some companies expect their turnover figures to slump for the 2020/21 financial year. Marc Payne, managing director, Armoric Freight International, said: “We have put plans in place, but the future is now uncertain with a potential of 40% reduction in our turnover for 2020.” Long Lane Deliveries expects its turnover to drop about 10% over the year. Other firms are more optimistic, such as fast-growing Culina Logistics. “Our growth momentum is continuing throughout 2020 and we are looking forward to 2021,” says Thomas Van Mourik, chief executive, Culina Logistics.
