Waitrose talks to Prime Minister about new UK distribution centre

Chorley, Lancashire, UK: Waitrose’s managing director, Mark Price, has discussed plans for a new £35m regional distribution centre (RDC) in Lancashire, with Prime Minister David Cameron.

Price met the Prime Minister at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester and detailed the development of the 30-acre Chorley site and the company’s future investment plans.

Price said:”This new distribution centre will support the growth of our business, be a boost for the North West, create 600 new jobs for the region and make it possible for us to invest £1bn in Britain over the next three years.

Cameron said: “The new regional distribution centre will give a boost to Chorley and the surrounding areas, not just by creating 600 jobs immediately, but in paving the way for tens of thousands more.”

The 33,445 square metre Chorley site will allow Waitrose to service up to 80 branches as part of its rapidly growing portfolio of shops in the North of England and Scotland.

The new distibution centre is expected to be operational by autumn 2012. The recruitment process for drivers and warehouse staff will begin in spring next year.
