Wincanton to manage Asda distribution centre

Rochdale, UK: Asda’s distribution centre under construction on Kingsway Business Park will be managed by Wincanton under a five-year contract starting in September 2012.

The £41m, 45,800sq metre new-build Rochdale Chilled Distribution Centre will handle chilled and frozen store orders, and the contract will also see Wincanton deliver to stores and supermarkets in the northwest M62 corridor.

Guy Elliott, Wincanton’s managing director for contract logistics, said: “We are delighted to announced this contract win as it demonstrates our commitment to growth in our core UK business. Wincanton already has strong links with the Asda brand, managing the general merchandise national distribution centre in Doncaster and running the company’s regional distribution centre in Larne, Northern Ireland.”

Asda is opening the Rochdale hub to meet increased capacity for its stores due to growth in the north west and Yorkshire following last year’s acquisition of Netto. Ian Stansfield, distribution director for the Walmart-owned store chain, said: “We awarded the contract to Wincanton because of the clear passion shown by their operations people and their management of grocery supply chain from warehouse through to store delivery.”

The new distribution centre will handle up to three million cases of chilled and frozen products each week. Construction firm McLaren has the contract for the development, which also includes offices, vehicle wash, fuelling and servicing facilities, landscaping and a car park.
